Where’s Wally? x The Department Store for Christmas!

Words by Angela Bevan

This Christmas, The Department Store have brought one of their all time favourite characters to life with a limited edition, in-store only release.

Long before gifs and Instagram, there was a little guy who was loved the world over thanks purely to the hand-drawn genius of his creator, Martin Handford. In 1986, British illustrator Handford was asked by his art director at Walker Books to draw a character with peculiar features so that his signature pictures of crowds had a focal point. After much thinking, he came up with the idea of “Wally”, a world traveller and time travel aficionado who always dresses in red and white. Sometimes it would take him up to eight weeks to draw a two-page sketch of the elusive “Wally” and the characters surrounding him.

Since these humble beginnings, the puzzle pictures have been printed in 30 languages and sold in 38 different countries, including under the alias of “Where’s Waldo?” in the United States. Wally has inspired video games, a TV show, a comic strip… and of course, today Wally is on Twitter and Facebook – in fact Where’s Wally? is now among the top 25 public figures on Facebook, with four million fans.

To mark the 25th anniversary of Where’s Wally? – and just because we love him – The Department Store have worked with Where’s Wally? to produce a limited edition collection of carry bags, cards and wrap featuring an iconic Where’s Wally? image, just in time for Christmas.

Check out our vintage Where’s Wally? gallery – and pop in to The Department Store to receive a complimentary bag with every purchase, and wrapping on request.
