Valery Gherman’s Adventures in Antarctica

Words by Valery Gherman

I had the trip of a lifetime in December of 2012. I was the makeup artist for the Swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated and working with cover star Kate Upton. The swimsuit issue comes out once a year, and being the 50th issue, it was fitting that all seven continents were locations in the 2013 issue. Prior to the Antarctica shoot, I also travelled to Guilin, China for the same issue, which was just mind blowing, and of course deserves a separate post.

The entire crew for the shoot flew from New York to Buenos Aires, then onto Ushuaia, the Southern most point of Argentina, where we boarded the ship Le Boreal, for a forty-eight hour Drake Passage crossing before arriving in Antarctica. By the time we had arrived at our first destination on the White continent, the crew had already spent five days hanging out en route in various cities, and enjoying the cruise across the high seas. Ten days of life changing beauty weaving along the peninsula, with a bonus icy dip in the ocean at Deception Island, the Caldera of an active volcano, (seen in the video clip below), and then another 5 days getting back home. Here are some photos and a video from that trip.

After such an amazing trip, the crew all suffered the usual Post Shoot Depression and separation anxiety re adjusting to ‘normal’ life again.
